The Four Anchors

These are not habits. They're anchors. You don't build them by remembering. You build them by putting them in your environment so you don't have to remember.

1. Anchor 1: The No-AI Hour is on your calendar, not in your head

It lives on your calendar as a recurring 8am-noon-1pm block. It's color-coded. It has a notification. Your calendar is the external brain โ€” use it.

2. Anchor 2: Batch AI, don't scatter it

Your AI tasks have a home: the 15-minute batch at the end of each deep work block. Not in the middle. Not when you get stuck. The batch is sacred.

3. Anchor 3: The Explanation Requirement

Before you accept any AI output, you must be able to explain why it's right. Not just that it looks right. Why it's right. This one practice eliminates 80% of ghost authorship and skill atrophy.

4. Anchor 4: Weekly recalibration

Every Sunday evening, 15 minutes: what did I build this week that I understand? What did I ship that I'm not sure about? What am I going to do differently next week? The journal is your recalibration tool.

What You Take With You

The five days are the beginning, not the whole thing. The actual recovery is what you build in the weeks after โ€” the no-AI hours that stack, the batches that start to feel natural, the problems you solve that you couldn't have solved before.

AI is not going away. The tools are going to get better. The pressure is going to get stronger. The engineers who thrive are not the ones who use AI the most. They're the ones who use it with a clear sense of what they own and what they borrow.
