The four fatigue dimensions you need to understand

Before we compare tools, we need a shared vocabulary. Fatigue from AI coding tools isn't one thing. It's four distinct but intertwined phenomena — and each tool hits them differently.

1. Decision Fatigue

Every AI suggestion is a micro-decision: accept, reject, modify, or ignore. That sounds trivial. But your brain's decision-making resources are finite, and they don't distinguish between "should I refactor this function?" and "should I accept this 12-line completion?". Cognitive load theory (Sweller, 1988) distinguishes between intrinsic load (inherent complexity of the task), extraneous load (unnecessary processing created by poor presentation), and germane load (useful mental effort that builds schemas). AI tools ideally reduce extraneous load — but often, they inadvertently increase it by adding a parallel stream of information you must process, evaluate, and manage on top of the actual problem you're trying to solve.

The code problem you're working on has a cognitive load. The AI's suggestion has a cognitive load — you have to read it, understand it, compare it to your own thinking, and decide. That's additive. When the AI is wrong (and it often is, subtly), that extra load is pure waste.

Copilot is the most widely adopted AI coding tool in the world — and that adoption comes with a normalized fatigue cost that's easy to miss precisely because everyone around you is experiencing it too.

Where Copilot's fatigue comes from

GitHub Copilot pioneered the tab-to-accept inline completion model, and in doing so, it trained an entire generation of engineers to outsource code retrieval to AI. That's not an exaggeration — the affordance itself shapes behavior. When the next line of code is always visible one keypress away, the brain learns to reach for it rather than construct it.

The decision fatigue from Copilot is high because suggestions are frequent, contextually plausible-looking (even when subtly wrong), and trivially easy to accept. How to use Copilot with lower fatigue

  • Turn off auto-suggest. Use Copilot in manual trigger mode (Ctrl+Enter) so you only invoke it when you actively want a suggestion. This eliminates the passive suggestion stream.
  • Dedicate no-Copilot blocks. At least 2 hours per day, turn it off completely. Protect the muscle.
  • Before accepting, mentally predict. Before you look at the suggestion, write what you expect the next line to be. This forces active engagement and tells you whether you understood the problem.
  • Review what you accepted. End-of-day, skim your git diff. For each Copilot block, ask: could I have written this? Do I understand it? Would I have made a different choice?

Why Cursor hits differently

The decision scope is enormous. And the AI-chat integration means you're also making meta-decisions: should I ask the AI? How should I frame this? Is this worth an AI context switch or should I just figure it out?

These meta-decisions are invisible cognitive work. They don't feel like work. But they're real, they accumulate, and they're happening constantly in an AI-first IDE.

Additionally, Cursor's power comes partly from deep customization (rules files, context configuration, .cursorrules). That investment in customization deepens dependency. The more you optimize for Cursor, the harder it is to step away.

A note on Cursor's genuine strengths

This isn't an argument against Cursor. For exploration, greenfield projects, boilerplate generation, and rapid prototyping, it's genuinely impressive. The fatigue risk is specific to how and how much you use it. Engineers who use Cursor selectively — for specific high-leverage tasks, with deliberate no-AI zones — can get the benefits with lower fatigue cost.

Multi-turn ChatGPT sessions for coding often become treadmills: the AI gives you code, you paste it, it breaks, you paste the error back, it gives you more code, you paste it, it breaks differently. Each turn feels productive (you're getting answers!) but the session as a whole is often lower value than having worked through the problem yourself from the start. In mainstream language contexts (Python, JavaScript, TypeScript), Codeium's suggestions are high quality and well-fitted to common patterns. In specialized or niche domains, they're less reliable. This creates an interesting skill erosion map: engineers doing standard web or data work face higher erosion risk, while engineers in highly specialized domains (embedded, unusual languages, novel frameworks) are somewhat protected by the AI being wrong often enough that they can't over-rely on it.

Windsurf: the agentic leap
